| I
established Kalen Woodworks in 1987 with the idea that I would create
work of my designs only, with integrity and honor for the materials.
For me, wood is a precious material harvested from our cherished
forests. To build an object that through the design or lack of craftsmanship
could simply be discarded is unthinkable. |
| |
I
strive to design pieces for individuals to fit their aesthetics
and need for functionality while interjecting my own, often-strong
opinion of what design elements work best for any given situation.
Wood choices are often a collaborative effort between client and
myself but ultimately decisions take place quietly in the studio
when I see the wood that I’ve gathered for a project.
Joinery
is a blend of machine and handwork with an emphasis on tried and
true methods of our past masters, done with the intention that a
piece should well outlast me and be passed along to new generations.

|
The biggest compliment I receive for my work is that my clients
come back to me through the years to commission more work, and that
I find myself working for others in their family and for their friends.
I am truly blessed
with a vocation that I love and a community at large that appreciates
and supports the craft.

In
November 2002, I moved my studio onto my land in the foothills.
A beautiful remote spot with a healthy forest of Ponderosa
Pine, Fir and Aspen. The location is off the grid and
powered with solar and a propane back up generator. Having
spent 9 months building the new space with much help from
family and friends and ramping up the power system the
business went on to have a banner year.
|
| Unfortunately,
October 29th, 2003 a wildfire blew across the land vaporizing
my property as well as several neighbors and 3,500 acres of
land. We've since rebuilt the studio and a new straw bale
home and the buisness is up and running. The Aspen are already
4' tall and there are tiny Fir and Ponderosa Pine coming up.
The valley is still beautiful and the wild life is back in
force and so are we! |
